Library and Student Resource Center
Dear Gavilan Community,
I'm thrilled to share that our new Library and Student Resource Center (LSRC) is opening ahead of schedule! I look forward to seeing our students and staff begin using this space. View the map here.
I would like to commend Serafin Fernandez, Director of Capital Projects, for his outstanding leadership on this project. Special thanks go to Eddy Medal, Director of Facilities, and his operations team for their tireless work supporting the new facility and its systems, as well as to everyone who contributed to the design and planning process. Thank you also to Kyle Billups and his IT team for coordinating technology set-up and supporting employees through the move so they can begin working in their new spaces. Thank you to everyone who contributed to designing and planning this new space.
Above all, thank you to the teams and individuals relocating to the new building in the coming weeks. I recognize that moving is no easy task, and I truly appreciate your hard work and patience in making this transition a success.
Moving in early gives us time to settle in gradually, test our systems, and see how the space works for students and staff before our official ribbon-cutting celebration on Friday, January 22, 2027.
Phased Transition Timeline
To keep you fully informed, here is the timeline for how and when different areas will transition:
By October 27 (Soft Opening Phase):
First Floor: Student Services offices relocating to the LSRC will open (Welcome Center, Admissions and Records, Financial Aid, Counseling, Transfer and Career Center, Student Support Programs, Accessible Education Center, and the Veterans Center).
Second Floor: The Executive Team and the Teaching and Learning Center (TLC) will be open to visitors.
Note on Specific Programs: El Centro (L-139) and Higher Aspirations (LI-132) will remain in their current locations in the old Library building for now.
Health Services (SC-128) is moving to the former CalWORKs space (LI-135).
During Winter Break:
The Library and its core academic support services—including the Tutorial Center and Writing Center—will relocate during the break. This timing minimizes disruption to student access to books and resources during the semester.
Access and Navigation
As work continues on landscaping, additional entrances, please keep the following access points in mind:
Main Entrance: During our soft opening period, please use the main entrance at the front of the building, closest to Parking Lot A. Visitors coming from other parts of campus should take Sycamore Lane to reach the front entrance. Please note: There is currently no access from the back of the building as work is still underway in those areas. Please refer to the attached map for recommended routes.
Second-Floor Access: The second-floor exterior doors will remain closed until library services relocate in January. Visitors needing access to the second floor should use the main entrance and use the stairs or the elevator.
Future Access to Entrances: As we finalize external landscaping and pathways, an additional entrance at the back of the building will open in January. We will share updated maps as new routes become available!
Door Push Buttons: Please note that the building, as is, meets accessibility standards and is fully accessible via elevators and ramps. While electronic push buttons are planned, they are not yet installed. We recognize how important these features are. Please rest assured that installing these push buttons is a top priority, and we are working diligently to have them completed as soon as possible.
If you have questions or require assistance accessing the building, please contact Celia Laguna De Flores at clagunadeflores@gavilan.edu.
Looking Ahead
Except for the old Library building, which has reached the end of its operational lifecycle, plans are already underway to repurpose the spaces being vacated by Student Services and the Tutorial Center. We look forward to sharing those exciting plans once they are finalized.
Thank you for your patience, flexibility, and enthusiasm as our campus community transitions smoothly into our incredible new home for student success. We cannot wait to celebrate with all of you at our official ribbon-cutting event on Friday, January 22, 2027!
Sincerely,
Dr. Pedro Avila
